Step into the world of the Templar Knights and explore Portugal’s most legendary medieval sites
Your day begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Lisbon, in a private, air-conditioned vehicle heading to Tomar, a city built by and for the Knights Templar.
You’ll explore the stunning Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, originally founded in 1160. It included a fortified village, military headquarters, and the Charola (Templar rotunda church), completed in 1190. In 1420, Prince Henry the Navigator transformed the military house into a contemplative convent for the Order of Christ. Later, King Manuel I added a new wing decorated with symbols celebrating the Portuguese Maritime Discoveries and the spiritual mission of the Order.
You’ll also visit two Templar churches, the historic Tomar Synagogue, and enjoy a tasting of the region’s famous ginjinha liqueur.
After lunch, we continue to the dramatic Almourol Castle, standing proudly on an island in the Tagus River. It recalls the Christian Reconquest period, having been taken in 1129, then rebuilt by Gualdim Pais in 1171, according to a stone inscription at the entrance.
The tour also includes the Quinta da Cardiga, a former estate of the Templars and the Order of Christ, known for its Manueline-style portal and 17th–18th century tiles.
Return to Lisbon in the late afternoon, enriched by this immersive historical journey.
