Discover Fátima and Coimbra: A Day of Faith, History and Knowledge

We begin our journey in Porto and head to Coimbra, Portugal’s academic capital and home to the country’s oldest university, founded in the 12th century. We’ll visit the iconic Joanina Library, which houses over 300,000 volumes including rare and historical manuscripts. Next, we’ll explore the Romanesque-style Old Cathedral and cross the Mondego River to visit the Santa Clara Convent and the famous Quinta das Lágrimas, setting of the tragic love story between King Pedro and Inês de Castro.
After a traditional lunch at a local downtown tavern, we continue to Fátima, where the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Here, you’ll visit the impressive Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where Lúcia, Jacinta and Francisco are buried, and the modern Church of the Holy Trinity, the largest Catholic church in Portugal.
We’ll also stop at the Chapel of the Apparitions, built on the very spot where the Virgin appeared, and the century-old holm oak tree under which the children prayed before the visions. A day rich in spirituality, heritage and culture before returning to Porto.
