Braga & Guimarães: Heritage, Tradition and the Spirit of Portugal
Our journey begins in Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal’s first king, Afonso I. We’ll visit the imposing Castle of Guimarães, St. Michael’s Chapel where the king was baptized, and the grand Palace of the Dukes of Bragança. The tour continues to the Church of Our Lady of Oliveira, the symbolic Holy Steps, and the famous Praça da Oliveira, a gathering point cherished by generations. We’ll walk down Rua de Santa Maria, one of the oldest streets in town, to reach the Santa Clara Convent and see the Town Hall and other medieval UNESCO World Heritage buildings. After lunch at the charming Praça de Santiago, we continue to Braga — one of Portugal’s oldest cities. In the city center, we’ll visit Praça da República, admire the façade of the Congregados Church, stop by the intriguing House of Riddles (Casa dos Crivos), and enjoy a traditional coffee at A Brasileira café. We’ll explore Largo do Paço with its 18th-century fountain and medieval keep before finishing the day at the magnificent Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, with its baroque staircase and panoramic views. Return to Porto at dusk.
