Ancient Lisbon: Living History Between Alfama and Baixa
The tour begins at Praça D. Pedro IV, commonly known as Rossio, one of the city’s most emblematic squares. A stage for historical events, cultural gatherings, and a popular meeting point for locals over the centuries, it is surrounded by traditional cafés, theatres, and intricate cobblestone pavement, an ideal departure point for your journey into Lisbon’s past. We’ll head through the neoclassical streets of the Pombaline Downtown (Baixa), admiring its elegant architecture, until reaching Lisbon Cathedral (Sé), the city’s oldest religious building. Here, we’ll visit the interior, exploring its thousand-year-old history shaped by reconstructions, archaeological finds, and a deeply spiritual atmosphere. We then continue towards São Jorge Castle, stopping outside the entrance to understand its strategic importance in Lisbon’s history while enjoying panoramic views over the city. Next stop: the famous Portas do Sol viewpoint, offering postcard-worthy views over the traditional Alfama district and the Tagus River. As we descend through Alfama, we’ll pass the Church of São Miguel, a small yet significant symbol of the neighborhood’s popular religiosity. We continue to Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, home to one of the oldest public fountains in the city, once central to everyday life in old Lisbon.
The tour proceeds with a stop at the unique Casa dos Bicos, a Renaissance-style building with a diamond-shaped stone façade, now the headquarters of the José Saramago Foundation. Your guide will share the cultural and historical context of the site and its connection to Portugal’s Nobel Prize-winning author. The tour ends at the majestic Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço), symbol of royal power and of Lisbon’s rebirth after the 1755 earthquake. This open square facing the Tagus is the perfect place to relax or continue exploring independently. This carefully curated route offers a true journey through time, charming alleys, stunning views, and living heritage await.
